Radical Surrender: Jim Elliot’s Passionate Journals
Share
Jim Elliot (1927–1956) was a young missionary whose life and death among the Waodani people in Ecuador became a powerful testimony of total commitment to Christ. Before his martyrdom, Elliot filled his journals with raw prayers, Scripture meditations, and bold declarations of surrender.
One of his most famous entries (often dated around his college years):
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”
Another reflective entry captures his heart for missions and holiness:
“Lord, fill preachers and preaching with power. How long dare we go on without tears; without moral passions; hatred and love? Not long, I pray, Lord Jesus, not long…”
How Journaling Fueled Elliot’s Spiritual Growth
Elliot used his journal as a private battleground for his soul. Writing helped him:
- Wrestle honestly with temptation, doubt, and the cost of discipleship.
- Clarify his calling and fuel a burning passion for the lost.
- Turn Scripture into personal prayers and resolutions that shaped his daily decisions.
- Preserve moments of God’s nearness, sustaining him through waiting and hardship.
His journals reveal a young man who wasn’t naturally “super-spiritual” but who grew through intentional reflection - ultimately inspiring generations to live with eternity in view.
