The Disciplined Heart: John Wesley’s Methodical Journal

At Glory Bound Journals, we believe journaling is an ancient spiritual practice that helps believers grow deeper in their walk with Christ. Many giants of the faith turned to the written page to track God’s work, examine their souls, and stay accountable in their daily devotions.

Few embodied disciplined devotion like John Wesley (1703–1791), founder of Methodism. Known as a tireless preacher, organizer, and revivalist, Wesley traveled thousands of miles and preached over 40,000 sermons. His extensive journal, spanning decades, recorded not only his travels and ministry but also his inner spiritual temperature, prayers, and reflections on Scripture and daily life.

An Example from Wesley’s Journal from January 1, 1739 (a New Year’s entry reflecting his ongoing quest for assurance and holiness):

“I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.”

Wesley’s journals often captured moments of spiritual breakthrough amid routine travel, preaching, and society meetings, blending honest self-assessment with praise for God’s faithfulness.

How Journaling Fueled Wesley’s Spiritual Growth

Wesley didn’t journal casually. He used it as a tool for rigorous self-examination, asking himself pointed questions about how he spent his time, whether his heart was warm toward God, and how he could redeem every moment for the Gospel. This practice helped him:

- Maintain extraordinary discipline in prayer, Bible study, and fasting.
- Track spiritual highs and lows, preventing complacency and driving him back to grace.
- Document God’s answers to prayer and the fruit of his ministry, strengthening his faith during opposition.
- Model methodical living (“Methodism”) for thousands of followers.

Through consistent writing, Wesley turned fleeting thoughts and emotions into lasting anchors of faith, fueling one of the greatest revivals in church history.

Stay tuned for more in this series! If disciplined devotion resonates with you, our Glory Bound Journals provide structured space for Scripture, prayer, and reflection - just like Wesley’s methodical approach.
