The Mother of Methodism: Susanna Wesley’s Spiritual Writings and Reflections

Susanna Wesley (1669–1742), mother of John and Charles Wesley, raised 19 children while maintaining a rich inner life of prayer and theological reflection. Though her time was limited, she wrote meditations, commentaries, and letters that functioned as spiritual journals.

In one of her devotional reflections (from her spiritual diary/meditations):

“Preserve the dignity of your nature… Let not the spirit of this world… draw you into any unworthy action.”

She also wrote structured theological pieces for her children, such as expositions on the Apostles’ Creed and the Ten Commandments, blending Scripture study with personal application.

Despite constant demands, Susanna carved out time for written devotion. This practice helped her:

- Maintain spiritual focus amid chaos (famously praying under an apron for privacy).
- Pass on deep faith to her children through thoughtful letters and teachings.
- Process Scripture and apply it personally for wisdom and holiness.
- Model disciplined piety that influenced the Methodist revival.

Her written legacy shows that even busy believers can use journaling to anchor their souls and disciple others.
